How Can I Recover Deleted Photos after Formatting the Memory Card

Question: This morning, I plugged my SD card from my Cannon digital camera into my Dell laptop for backing up some newly taken pictures. But, it asked me if I want to “format” this SD card. Not knowing what was going on, I clicked “OK”. After a while, I finally realized that I had deleted all these photos by the formatting. What had I done? Is there a way to unformat this SD card? If you know anything about it, please let me know! Thank you in advance!
